Disabled people & their challenges in Afghanistan

International Day of People with Disability on Dec 3 is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992.

The aim of Disability Day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people, as well as raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life, from economic, to political, to social and cultural.

Disability Day is not concerned exclusively with either mental or physical disabilities, but rather encompasses all known disabilities, from Autism to Down syndrome to Multiple Sclerosis.

Unfortunately, Afghanistan is among the countries with high number of disabled people.

According to statistics, currently, there are over one million disabled people in Afghanistan, a number which consists 2.7 percent of the country’s whole population.

However, the number is still getting increased by each passing day.

Therefore, the government of Afghanistan should work on a mechanism, based on which to provide the disabled people with specific rights and privileges.

Persons with disabilities, “the world’s largest minority”, often face barriers to participation in all aspects of society. Barriers can take a variety of forms, including those relating to the physical environment or to information and communications technology (ICT), or those resulting from legislation or policy, or from societal attitudes or discrimination.

The result is that persons with disabilities do not have equal access to society or services, including education, employment, health care, transportation, political participation or justice.

The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the inclusion of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life.

In fact, one of the key priorities is to change the negative believes in the society towards disabled people. Because, unfortunately, people with disabilities are not treated as like as sound people.

Thus, it is hoped the people respect the disabled people and always support them in any field.
